BACK TO SCHOOL 2007 Tips on saving and making money
Although it's not everything and can't buy you happiness, money is a major issue. Nobody likes being broke, and Cashtown University makes sure you start off this school year right! Check out some helpful information and advice about saving money this school year and making a little extra money on the side!

Buy used books

When it comes to text books, there's really no purpose in having a brand new one. Take advantage of the deals on used text books at your school store. If your school doesn't offer any, find them online. You can find great deals on sites like ebay.com and amazon.com. Used text books are just as good as new ones. Plus, they cost less!

Don't over spend on lunch
No matter where you choose to eat for the day, make sure you watch your spending. You definitely shouldn't spend more than $10 dollars on one lunch. Try to spend around $5 if you can. Some cafeterias and restaurants may be pricey so try to stay away from expensive meals whenever you can. If you dorm and you payed for a cafeteria ID card, take advantage of it so that you never have to pay for lunch out of pocket.

Get a bus card
If your a commuter, you should definitely get a bus card. You know you'll be taking the same bus every day, so you might as well pay your fare in advance. Most modes of public transportation offer the equivalent of a bus card, so you'll be able to find a way to pay in advance no matter how you get to school.

Find inexpensive fun
You can have fun with out hurting your pockets. Many colleges host parties on campus that charge about $5 for admission. You can also find local parties and events in the nearest city. Some clubs even have college events at which they give discounts to students. There are also lots of free events and shows through out the school year. Look for these at your school and around the neighborhood.

Leave the car back home
If your planning on dorming, you probably shouldn't take a car with you. With the increase of gas prices you can just imagine how empty your fridge would be. On top of gas, you'd still be paying for insurance and other charges. Stick to public transportation. It saves you money and helps in getting to know your school's neighborhood, too.

Start a business
Of course you'll be too busy studying for the biology quiz and reading history books while trying to finish that English term paper you didn't turn in yesterday, but don't kid yourself. If you develop good time management skills you'll have more than enough time to start your own business. Especially if you don't have a job. Start a campus based business, or even an online business. Use your skills to make you money. Who knows, you might end up the richest kid on campus!

Open a savings account

If you don't already have one, you should open up a savings account. Some banks offer accounts that are specially designed for college students. Start saving money in your account by depositing small amounts every week. Its simple as that, and its better than that glass jar you keep change in.

Don't party TOO much
Even though you might find inexpensive parties and events, attending too many of these will more than likely hurt your pockets. Calculate the cost of admission, the cost of transportation to get to and from the party, the cost of that new outfit you bought just for that party, and the cost of drinks you might end up buying at the party. That's alot of money to be spending every week. Just choose your parties wisely. Most of them end up being just "alright" any way.

With that said, have fun this school year and maintain good grades. You have so many other things to worry about, so don't let being broke make school harder for you. This is Cashtown University wishing you good luck!
